How to use the Online Trip Planner

To use the Online Trip Planner, either type in your origin and destination, or click on the map and select that address as origin or destination. Then select whether you want your trip to be most direct or most bike friendly. After reading the disclaimer, click "get directions." The trip planner will provide you with directions and a map, which you can either print or send using a link. If you have additional questions, please let us know.

What is the Online Trip Planner?

In February 2008, SACOG was awarded a grant to develop a Sacramento-Region online trip planner and a bicycle map. SACOG staff worked with local agencies to collect their most up-to-date bicycle facility information. Local advocates also provided valuable input during this process.

Using the data provided from our member agencies, SACOG staff developed an integrated, GIS-based street and bicycle network file. Staff also developed the trip planner application by combining the technologies of Google maps and ESRI's ArcGIS Server.

The trip planner offers several exciting benefits to Sacramento Region, including:

  • Local government data — the trip planner information comes directly from SACOG's local government member agencies. Relationships with local bike planners and GIS staff offer a unique benefit to maintaining current and accurate bicycle facility information.
  • User information — the website asks users to contact us to report information that should be reflected in the trip planner. For example, a local cyclist can recommend the trip planner not route onto a certain road or area, either long term (bad road) or short term (flooding or construction). Using information such as this, SACOG can change the preference in the actual application.
  • Community forum — the website offers a blog feature so that users can ask questions and provide answers, as well as recommend routes within the community.
